Science Shaping Our World-SHOW: Novel RNAi/Nanotechnology Based Breast Cancer Therapeutic Strategy

SHOW SKSpecial Guest Speaker: Silva Krause, Ph.D.-Scientist, Biomarker Discovery, Momenta Pharmaceuticals

Registration at: http://showapril2014.eventbrite.com

Science Shaping Our World-SHOW is an ongoing seminar and networking series that highlights cutting edge translational life science research and development. Our mission is to bring together a multidisciplinary audience spanning academia and industry providing exposure and insight into the life science advancements changing our world.

April’s SHOW will focus on the convergence of life science computation and nanotechnology toward novel Breast Cancer therapeutics. Increased patient education and screening has resulted in a greater ability to detect premalignant breast lesions, yet treatment options have remained by and large limited to either surveillance or surgical removal.

Our special guest speaker, Dr. Silva Krause, will speak on her recent work, published in the January issue of Science Translational Medicine, focusing on addressing premalignant breast lesions through a combination of computational gene network modeling and RNA interference (RNAi) technology. Briefly, her work focused on elucidating genes that were drivers of early mammary cancer progression and then silencing them as an approach toward halting progression of the disease. Dr. Krause’s strategy encompassed the use of locally delivered small interfering RNA (siRNA), through the use of nanoparticles, resulting in a novel and nonsurgical way to inhibit breast cancer progression.

Dr. Krause hails from a multidisciplinary background in both engineering as well as cellular and molecular developmental biology. Her postdoctoral work was done in the laboratory of Donald Ingber at Boston Children’s Hospital, and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, where she worked to successfully leverage her background in technology and biomedical science. Bridging the gap from academia to industry, Dr. Krause recently joined Momenta Pharmaceuticals, a leader in the analysis, characterization, and design of complex pharmaceuticals.
